General
|
 |
|
|
 |
|
| 1. |
What
is AMS Binder? |
| |
AMS Binder is an integrated application
suite that can efficiently apply external bookmarks
to PDF files using external control files and
then can efficiently merge these PDF files to
produce the desired work-product. In addition
to physically merging these files into a single
file, AMS can merge them logically leaving the
original files unchanged and supporting the merge
function through integrated bookmarks and a top-level
navigation page. It also allows you to set both
Security and File Open properties for the Binder
output PDF files. Binder also supports a comprehensive
pre and post processing QA-Audit function to enhance
bookmark quality for Binder files, and bookmark
information control files in TXT and MRK formats.
Bookmarks can be added, deleted, sorted, indented,
edited, set page destinations. Bookmarks can also
be printed or exported for a later reuse. |
| 2. |
Who
can benefit from AMS Binder? |
| |
AMS Binder offers a rich mix of
features specially designed to meet a variety
of PDF merge, split and bookmark integration needs
for individuals, small businesses, large enterprises,
and PDF publishing houses. These features have
been carefully integrated to provide the demanding
user with a powerful combination of tools answering
to all the PDF work-product needs at one place. |
| 3. |
How
many ways can I perform physical merge using AMS
Binder? |
| |
In addition to allowing you to physically
merge PDF files as-is, AMS Binder also allows
you to limit physical merging to certain pages
and/or page ranges from each PDF file. It also
enables you to merge only the bookmarked destination
pages from the selected PDF files. |
| 4. |
Can
I split PDF files using AMS Binder? |
| |
Yes, you can use AMS Binder to split
PDF files. It allows you to split a certain pages
and/or range of pages from a PDF file, or you
can choose to split all the bookmarked destination
pages. For more details click
here. |
| 5. |
Does
AMS Binder get attached to Acrobat and open with
it? |
| |
AMS Binder is a separate application
and has its own working interface. For most of
its features, it does not require Adobe Acrobat.
However, Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or higher is required
for ‘Visual Audit’ feature at the
end of Binder creation and in Binder Audit, and
for ‘Preview’ function in Binder Index.
|
| 6. |
Can
I edit the bookmarks in my output Binder PDF file? |
| |
Yes, the QA-Audit function installed
in AMS Binder allows you to easily add, delete,
edit, sort bookmarks, set page destinations, and
adjust the bookmark hierarchy with speed and accuracy.
Bookmarks from binder can also be exported to
external files or printed for later re-use purposes.
For more details click here. |
| 7. |
Can
I pre-edit the resultant bookmarks in my final
Binder PDF file? |
| |
AMS Binder can create the resultant
bookmark tree before creating your final output
binder file, and allows you to pre-edit these
resultant bookmarks. This pre-editing feature
makes AMS Binder a unique tool among its counterparts.
You can easily add, delete, edit, sort bookmarks,
set page destinations, and adjust the bookmark
hierarchy with speed and accuracy. |
| 8. |
Can
I set Security Options and File Open properties
for the Binder output PDF files? |
| |
Yes, using AMS Binder, you can set
restrict file access by imposing password protection
in the Binder output PDF files. Other than restricting
unauthorized access to the file, you can also
impose restrictions on printing, selection of
text and graphics or making changes in the document,
notes or form fields by specifying a second password.
AMS Binder also allows you to preset document
open options as desired and provide options to
set page layout and magnification for the Binder
output PDF files. |

| 1. |
The
PDF files that I want to merge are present in
different folders. / What is an .LST file? |
| |
The best thing to do is to move
copies of those files in a single folder and specify
that folder as the Source Folder. Another method,
however, would be to copy the PDF filenames of
the desired PDF files to be merged, with or without
complete folder path information, in a Notepad
text file. This should be done one file path per
line. This file should then be saved with a .LST
extension. When a folder path is not given against
a PDF filename in this .LST file, Binder looks
for that PDF file in the same folder where .LST
file is located. This .LST file can then be used
for merging the required files. |
| 2. |
Can
I use .LST file and specify a source folder at
the same time? |
| |
Yes, a source folder and an .LST
file could be specified simultaneously to get
PDF files from both sources.
|
| 3. |
How
can I remove PDF files from the loaded PDF filenames
list in
Step 1? |
| |
If any PDF file is not required
for a final merge operation, you can remove
it by selecting and pressing the 'Delete' key
from the keyboard. This will only remove the
selected file from the list of loaded PDF files.
The PDF file on your hard disk will remain unaffected.
Pressing 'Load Files' button will again display
this file in the list of available files.
|
| 4. |
Can
I rename a loaded PDF file in Step 1? |
| |
You can rename any loaded PDF
filename by double clicking, or pressing F2
while it is selected. This helps rename files
in case any of the filenames is being repeated
and can affect the final output of the binder.
In case of a logical binder creation, these
filename changes will be reflected in the Bookmarks
Tree built in Step 2, and the respective final
output binder folder will have the renamed PDF
file(s) with the new name. However, renaming
the PDF file here will not rename the original
PDF file.
|
| 5. |
What
is the difference between a Logical Binder and
a Physical Binder? |
| |
AMS Auto PDF Binder allows you
to create a PDF binder using two different,
powerful and resourceful binding techniques
to meet your varied needs. You can either physically
merge multiple PDF files into a single PDF file
called a 'Physical Binder', or you can create
a 'Logical Binder' where original PDF files
are left unchanged and merge function is supported
through integrated bookmarks and a top-level
navigation page. This same merged tree is also
applied to individual source PDF files allowing
you to navigate across all the component PDF
files without physically merging them into a
single large file.
|
| 6. |
Can
I split PDF files using AMS Binder? How? |
| |
Yes, AMS Binder Application
Suite is a powerful tool that allows different
sorts of splitting and merging functions. Using
the Advanced options in Physical Binder for
a PDF file loaded in Step1, selecting the desired
pages and/or page ranges from source PDF files
will first split the intended pages from those
files and then merge these split pages together
to form a new required physical binder. Similarly,
you can also split and merge only the bookmark
destination pages from the
source file.
|
| 7. |
Are
my original source PDF files also affected after
Logical/Physical binding? |
| |
For both physical and logical
binders, original source PDF files always remain
unchanged.
|
| 8. |
Can
I create a physical binder containing only the
bookmarks destination pages? |
| |
Yes, this can be achieved by
selecting respective option in Advanced options
dialog of the Physical Binder in Step 1. If
the user selects this option, the application
will extract only those pages from source PDF
files that are actually the destination of any
of the available bookmarks in that source PDF
file and then merge all such pages, along with
their corresponding bookmarks, into a single
PDF file. However, bookmarks for destination
pages in remote PDF files will be ignored.
|
| 9. |
What
happens to my corrupt or password-protected source
files? |
| |
The damaged or password-protected
source PDF files identified in Step 1 would
not be processed through PDF binder, and an
error dialog box will be displayed while moving
on to Step 2. You will have an option either
to skip your erroneous file(s) to continue to
Step 2, or choose to stay in Step 1. In the
latter case, PDF Binder will display the erroneous
files in pink color. The erroneous files will
also be notified in pink while in Advanced Options
of the Physical Binder in Step 1.
|
| 10. |
What
if I have duplicate filenames in Step 1? |
| |
In case of logical binder, duplicate
filenames are not allowed because the files
have to be placed in the same subfolder under
the specified target folder after logical binder
creation. Application will give an error message
if you try to move on to Step 2 with duplications
in filenames, all instances of duplicate filenames
will be indicated in pink color. However, you
can still choose to have duplicate or unique
'Aliases' for bookmarks against desired PDF
filenames in the Bookmarks tree. In case of
physical binder, file duplication does not matter;
you'll be prompted whether or not to remove
any filename duplication.
|
| 11. |
What
does an 'Alias' mean? |
| |
An alias is alternate name assigned
to a filename to make it meaningful. Alias is
a name that could appear in the bookmarks of
the resultant PDF binder in place of a filenames.
For example 'Chapter 3' could be the alias for
a PDF file, 'Humanitarian report_part3.pdf'.
This will display as 'Chapter 3' in the bookmarks
of the said PDF file, instead of its real filename.
|
| 12. |
What
does 'Generate HTML' option mean? |
| |
Binder Application Suite can
also generate HTML code for the resultant PDF
binder file making it easier to place binder
PDF files on the Internet. This HTML code can
be placed on the website along with the corresponding
PDF files(s). In case of a physical binder,
moving the HTML code and the binder file in
the same folder on the website would make the
HTML functional. For a logical binder, the binder
file along with the PDF files created in the
Target Folder have to be moved to the same folder
on the website to function.
|
| 13. |
What
is a Binder Index? |
| |
Binder index is the page or
pages that can be embedded in start of the output
binder PDF file. This could act as an introduction
for the merged files and could also provide
a top-level navigational point in the form of
bookmarks and filename links. You can browse
to another PDF file and add that as an index
to your resultant binder file. PDF Binder also
gives you the alternative to import text from
a .TXT file, or type any text through keyboard
in the given text field. A logo can also be
added in picture file format. Both the text
and the logo, if provided, could be aligned
as desired.
|
| 14. |
Can
I specify document properties for the PDF binder
before creating it? |
| |
The Properties dialog box options
can be accessed by pressing the 'Properties…'
button under the Binder Preferences in Step
2: Preview and Create. Different kinds of document
properties for the resultant binder file can
be preset in this dialog box. Securities including
passwords and other privileges can also be decided
here.
|
| 15. |
What
does 'Move source files to a new folder' do? |
| |
With this option checked, whenever
a physical or a logical binder is created, its
corresponding source files will be moved to
a new subfolder created in the specified source
folder. The name of this subfolder will be 'binder'
followed by an initial numeric value of 1. This
numeric value will increment with each new subfolder
created by the application. In case of source
files specification through .LST file, only
the source .LST file will be moved to the new
folder; the participating PDF files will still
remain at their original folder location and
will not be moved even if this option is checked.
|
| 16. |
What
does 'Perform Visual Audit after binder creation'
mean? |
| |
By checking this option, AMS
Binder will automatically open up the binder
file in Adobe Acrobat for user to visually audit
the created bookmarks.
|
| 17. |
When
I move my logical binder from the Target Folder,
it doesn't display destination pages against bookmarks. |
| |
In case of the Logical Binder,
the source PDF files are not physically merged.
A logical binder PDF file contains bookmarks
pointing to destinations in remote PDF files,
and assumes the target files to be located in
the same folder where the logical binder is
located. If they are moved to other locations,
the logical binder could no longer point to
intended PDF files. To function properly, created
binder file and all its associated target PDF
files need to be placed in the same folder.
|
 |
|
| |
Import
Bookmarks |
 |
|
 |
|
| 1. |
Can I
use AMS Binder to bookmark scanned (image based)
PDF files? |
| |
Yes, AMS Binder can create bookmarks
for a scanned PDF file, as well. If you have the
Master File (an .mrk file or a Flat .txt file)
along with the respective scanned PDF, you can
use the 'Import Bookmarks' function to apply bookmarks
to the binder source PDF files.
The import bookmarks utility automatically process
bookmark information control files, extracts bookmarks
for specified criteria and applies these to relevant
PDF files. |
| 2. |
With
Import Bookmarks, can I process PDF files that
are only text-based or only image based, or a
combination of both? |
| |
The Import Bookmarks function is
equally capable of handling heterogeneous PDF
documents (containing both scanned images and
text pages), and, of course, PDF documents containing
normal searchable text pages. In import bookmarks,
the whole text page, would be considered as the
target location for a valid bookmark. |
| 3. |
What
is a Master File? / What is a Flat File? |
| |
A Master File is supposedly a complete
record of all the possible bookmarks pointing
to different pages of a target PDF file. The Master
File can exist in either .txt or .mrk format.
The .txt version of the file is called Flat File,
it contains page-wise information on the title
of the page, the page number (in the PDF document)
and at what level the bookmark should be added
to the PDF document each appearing on a new line.
Although there can be more attributes to this
information set, these three are essential to
create bookmarks in the concerned PDF document.
|
| 4. |
What
is an '.mrk' file? |
| |
An .mrk file is a file that contains
the PDF bookmarking information separately. Technically,
it is a text-based file in Adobe pdfmark compliant
scripting language format containing information
on creating bookmarks in a PDF file. The AMS Binder
Audit can also save bookmarks from the PDF documents
as a .txt or an .mrk file for a later reuse. |
| 5. |
What
is a List (.lst) file? |
| |
A list file is a text-based file
with the extension '.lst'. The page numbers of
the pages in the PDF document that are desired
to be bookmarked are stored in this file, each
separated by a carriage return. List File is placed
in the user-specified Source Folder along with
the corresponding Master File and the PDF document
to be bookmarked. The 'List File' option is selected
as the Filter criterion, from the Preferences
in the Import Bookmarks function. On pressing
the 'Go' button, the pages whose page numbers
are mentioned in this List File will be bookmarked
in the PDF document based on the information contained
in the Master File against those page numbers.
|
| 6. |
I don't
have a List file, but I do have .tif files from
the PDF document. Can I still process my PDF file
for bookmarks? |
| |
Yes, if you have one or more than
one related Tif files, a List file is not needed.
The names of the Tif files could either be numeric
values representing their corresponding page numbers
in the assisting PDF document or they could follow
a specified pattern containing both filename and
page numbers. The Import Bookmarks utility checks
the filenames of these Tif files, matches those
with the page numbers in the Master File and the
relevant PDF document, and creates bookmarks in
the PDF file. To make the Import Bookmarks utility
accept the Tif files, you need to change the filter
criterion to 'Tif files (.tif)' in the Import
Bookmark Preferences. After processing the Tif
file(s) and the PDF document, these files are
automatically moved to a new subfolder in the
Source Folder with name such as 'PDFDocument_FileName
- Tiff'. |
| 7. |
Can
I process more than one PDF documents with different
sets of Tif file(s)? |
| |
Yes, you can process more than
one PDF documents with different sets of Tif files.
This could be achieved in two ways. One way to
do this is that the names of the relevant Tif
files should comprise of the related PDF document
name followed by a delimiter and then their respective
page numbers. For instance, Tif files for the
"Report.pdf" document should be named as "Report_.tif",
where NumericValue is the corresponding page number
to be bookmarked in "Report.pdf". The second file
such as "Resources.pdf" should have Tif files
that look like "Resources_.tif".
The delimiters can be any one of '_', '-', '#'
or '$', and can be set accordingly in the Advanced
options of the Tif Files Filter Criteria under
the Import Bookmarks Setup Preferences.
The other way is that, you may include PDF filename
attribute in the master.txt. Thus each block of
bookmark information may have a separate PDF file
associated with it. This way, more than one PDF
documents, with same or different sets of Tif
files, can be bookmarked but the Master File,
however, can only be one at a time. |
| 8. |
What
if I don't have an .lst or .tif file(s)? / Can
I bookmark all the pages in the PDF document? |
| |
If you don't have a '.lst' or '.tif'
file(s) (in the Source Folder), all the bookmarks
contained in the Master File will be qualified
for bookmarks in the relevant PDF file on processing
through the Import Bookmarks function. For this,
you have to select 'None' option in the Filter
Criterion under the Import Bookmarks Preferences.
Selecting a non-applicable Filter Criterion will
generate errors. |
| 9. |
If my
.txt Master File (Flat File) contains any additional
attributes other than the four fixed ones, will
I still be able to process my PDF? / What is a
'placeholder'? |
| |
Yes, you can still successfully
process your PDF file, but you will have to notify
the Import Bookmarks utility about the extra attributes.
In the Advanced settings of the Flat File in the
Import Bookmarks Setup Preferences, you can introduce
one 'placeholder' against each extra attribute.
If there are more than one extra attributes, you
can generate same number of placeholders by providing
a numeric value in 'Specify No. of Placeholders'.
These additional attributes will appear only as
placeholders to the Import Bookmarks utility,
and will be ignored during processing. The order
of attributes can be specified by using the 'Up'
or 'Down' buttons. |
| 10. |
Is there
a way that the revisions of a page in a PDF document
be skipped from being bookmarked? |
| |
Yes, for both the List and the
Tif options of Filter Criteria, the page numbers
may also include revision numbers such as '001.001.tif',
where last 001 denotes a revision number. The
revision numbers are skipped during processing
and are not considered valid for creating bookmarks.
But it is assumed that a physical page corresponding
to the intended revision of the page does exist
in the source PDF file. The application does however
increment the physical page counter in the PDF
file as appropriate. |
| |
|
| |
Audit |
 |
|
|
 |
|
| 1. |
What
does Audit do? |
| |
As an integrated step in binder
creation, the Audit function allows you to review
and make necessary bookmark changes to a processed
PDF file or to the bookmarks contained in control
files that will be used to apply bookmarks to
source PDF files. The user can add, delete, edit,
indent, outdent, sort bookmarks, and can change
page destinations for the bookmarks. Bookmarks
can also be exported from PDF files as well as
printed in different styles. |
| 2. |
What
does 'Show Bookmark Tree' mean? |
| |
By checking this option, the bookmarks
of the file selected in the left pane of the Audit
window can be instantly loaded and seen in the
right (bookmarks) pane. For quick browsing of
listing, and other file related operations, this
option can even be unchecked in which case, the
bookmarks for the selected files will not be loaded
in the right pane. |
| 3. |
How
can I revert the changes I made to the bookmarks
in a file? |
| |
You can undo the changes in the
bookmarks of a file by pressing the flash icon
on the top left of the Audit window that says
'Reload from saved file', or perform the same
operation by pressing F5 key from the keyboard.
Pressing this button will bring the bookmarks
back to the condition they were after the latest
save.
Upon pressing the button with the flash icon,
application reads the last saved bookmarks and
updates the bookmark tree. This button serves
both 'Refresh' and 'Revert' functions and in both
cases displays the last saved bookmark tree on
the screen. |
| 4. |
Can
I save only the bookmarks from a file opened in
the Audit? / Can I export bookmarks? |
| |
Yes, you can save the bookmarks
from a PDF file opened in Audit. You have to choose
either TXT or .MRK from the Export Format in the
lower left corner of the Audit window. By pressing
the Export button, the Audit will save the bookmarks
to a control file in your selected format, .MRK
or .TXT. This file will carry the same name as
the corresponding PDF file and will be created
in the specified source folder. You will be able
to see this new bookmarks file by pressing the
Refresh Files List button at the top left of the
window or by pressing F8 key from the keyboard.
|
| 5. |
What
does 'Visual Audit' mean? |
| |
The 'Visual Audit' button opens
up the current selected PDF file in Adobe Acrobat.
You can perform any required editing to the bookmarks
while the file is open. This way the bookmarks
behavior can be verified at runtime. This feature
will only work with PDF files. |
| 6. |
Can
I audit logical binder PDF files? |
| |
Audit utility allows you to open
up all kinds of write-enabled PDF files that are
not protected by an open password. Logical binder
files can be opened up for auditing as easily
as normal PDF files. Audit utility also allows
you to set accurate page destinations for remote
bookmarks within a PDF file. In other words, you
can easily create remote bookmarks within not
just a logical binder file, but also any other
PDF file. |
