|
General
|
 |
|
|
 |
|
| 1. |
What
are bookmarks in a PDF document? |
| |
Bookmarks are used with multiple-page
PDF documents to help the reader easily navigate
to specific, locations within the document. You
can find the topics of interest and jump right
to them in the document. Without bookmarks, you
will have to go through the whole document searching
for the desired topics. |
| 2. |
What
is BMK? |
| |
BMK is a bookmarking tool that adds
bookmarks to the PDF documents. These bookmarks
could be based on the elements of a Table of Content
(TOC) in the documents, or a specified font-style,
or could be added directly as a result of text
selection or could be added after processing a
master bookmarks list against tiff or page number
information list files. Complex files, created
by merging of multiple files, can also be processed
efficiently. You can also add bookmarks to PDF
documents in bulk automatically. BMK features
enable a greater degree of reliability, flexibility,
and re-purposing of information. |
| 3. |
Who
can benefit from BMK? |
| |
BMK is useful to all those businesses
where bookmarks have to be added in bulk and have
a profound impact on overall productivity. Even
for normal users, it can be used as a convenient
tool to add bookmarks and navigate through PDF
documents. |
| 4. |
How
can BMK help me bookmark a PDF document?
|
| |
BMK offers multiple automated and
interactive processing options that can bookmark
and audit a variety of files quickly and accurately.
PDF files that have a namesake external control
file containing bookmark information, or have
an associated Font-Style specimen template or
contain a Table of Contents (TOC), can all be
easily processed in the automatic mode. PDF files
with improperly formatted TOCs, and files that
do not have a TOC, both small and large, can be
proficiently bookmarked using three different
solutions in BMK Interactive mode. |
| 5. |
Can
BMK bookmark the documents on its own?
|
| |
Other than its interactive mode,
BMK runs as an active service enabling it to bookmark
the documents on its own.The user has to specify
folders that would be used as active folders (watched
folders) by the BMK Application. On activating
the service, any PDF document present in that
folder would be automatically processed for bookmarking
in one of its three two automatic modes. |
| 6. |
In how
many ways can I add bookmarks to PDF documents
in bulk? |
| |
Bookmarks can be added either automatically
or interactively. The main input to automatically
add bookmarks using BMK is the table of contents
(TOC) of a PDF document. If you have a document
with a properly formatted (and recognizable) TOC,
you can use Auto TOC mode, which is an active
service, to process PDF documents in bulk. A Font
& Style template file can also be used to
add bookmarks to PDF files in bulk under the Automatic
mode. Similarly, for Scanned PDF files, you may
use Auto Mode of BMK application whereby it extracts
bookmarks from a Master bookmark control file
and applies the same to the relevant PDF files.
For non-Scanned PDF files, If the TOC is not properly
formatted, you can use TOC Zoning within Interactive
mode to identify the applicable TOC and create
bookmarks. In case of complete absence of a TOC,
you can use Font & Style option within the
Interactive mode by identifying unique styles
and sizes of the fonts in the document to generate
bookmarks out of them, in bulk. However, out of
three bulk methods, only the first method works
as an active service. |
| 7. |
Is BMK
completely automatic in its operations? |
| |
BMK has different modes of operation,
some of which are automatic; some are semi-automatic
while others are completely interactive. In some
cases where a file is very complexly formatted,
a combination of more than one method could also
be used to add bookmarks to the file. |
| 8. |
Does
BMK get attached to Acrobat and open with it? |
| |
BMK is a separate application and
has its own working interface; it does require
Acrobat Exchange to be present, though. You have
to run BMK Application Suite to access the different
bookmarking and auditing techniques that it offers.
|
 |
|
|
|
Installation
|
 |
|
 |
|
| 1. |
What
are the basic requirements for BMK to run on my
system? |
| |
BMK Application has the following
installation requirements:
- Pentium processor-based PC, PIII or above
- 256 MB of RAM or higher
- Win XP, Win 2000 or Win NT 4.0 (minimum
Service Pack 5)
- Acrobat 6.0 or Acrobat 7.0. It will not
work with Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Java Runtime Environment – JRE 1.4.0
(included in BMK software package) –
only required for Professional Edition of
BMK
|
| 2. |
Is
Adobe Acrobat Exchange always required on the
user machine? |
| |
Though it is not required for the
automatic mode but for other modes of operation,
it is an absolute requirement. |
| 3. |
Why
doesn't my BMK / BMK Lite Plug-in load with other
plug-ins that load at Adobe startup?
|
| |
If you have checked the option "Use
only certified plug-ins" in your Adobe preferences,
this will not load the BMK / BMK Lite plug-in.
For this, you will have to uncheck this option.
You may find this option in one of topics under
"Edit -> Preferences -> General…"
menu option or by pressing the "CTRL+K"
key combination. This will open the preferences
dialog using which you can enable Adobe to load
BMK / BMK Lite plug-ins as well.
|
| 4. |
How
can I buy BMK? Can I upgrade my evaluation version? |
| |
Once you have successfully tried
BMK evaluation version, you can purchase the complete
package from the website through our online purchase
system that supports credit card transactions
or you can contact us at
support@kapsware.com. |
| 5. |
There
are three different packages. How do I figure
out which package suits me most? |
| |
The three BMK packages are Lite,
Standard and Professional. Details for the package
that best suits your needs could be obtained from
our Products section, which contains a product-wise
list of summarized features.
Match your needs with the list of services each
package provides and get the most suitable package.
You can also contact our support
team for any kind of further assistance. |
| 6. |
How
can I convert evaluation version of BMK to a fully
functional copy? |
| |
Evaluation versions for Standard
and Professional editions of BMK, come as separate
packages. When you purchase the desired package,
you also get a license key associated with the
package along with user ID and password to logon
to the secured area of the site and download the
fully functional purchased package. When you run
this fully functional package for the first time,
it asks for the license key and with a valid license
key provided starts working without any limitations.
However, BMK Lite comes as a single package
that initially is in evaluation mode. This package
also has the capability to accept the license
key to make it work with all limitations removed.
For this, you will need to make an online purchase
of the package from the site after which you
will be provided with a license key. You can
then use this key to convert your evaluation
version into a fully functional application.

|
|
Auto Mode
|
 |
|
 |
|
| 1. |
What
is Auto Mode? |
| |
Auto Mode is the automatic execution
of BMK Application Suite. When this mode is executed,
PDF documents available in the user-specified
source (Watched) folder are processed automatically
and the final output is moved to the BMKOut folder
in a user-specified drive. Automatic mode intelligently
switches between three different bookmarking procedures
according to the preset order. First of all, it
runs as an Import Bookmarks Service using available
MRK file(s) to bookmark corresponding PDF file(s).
Secondly, it switches to Auto FS mode and looks
for a Font & Style template file (a BLI file)
to use as criteria for bookmarking the PDF files.
If there is no BLI, Auto TOC becomes active and
creates bookmarks in the PDF files upon finding
valid TOCs. |
| 2. |
What
does Auto TOC do? |
| |
While running in the Automatic mode,
BMK looks in the watched folder(s) for matching
pairs of PDF documents and ‘.mrk’
files, or a Font & Style template file (a
BLI file). However, if a corresponding .mrk file
is not present, and there is no applicable BLI
file, Auto Mode switches to Auto TOC and the application
will try to look for properly formatted Tables
of Contents (TOC) in the PDF documents. In case
a PDF is processed based on its TOC, the Auto
Mode is referred to as Auto TOC. Each PDF file
will now be processed based on the presence of
a properly formatted single column or two column
TOC. Using Auto TOC, BMK automatically generates
bookmarks out of the TOC elements. Since it is
an active service, it is most useful while adding
bookmarks to PDF documents in bulk. |
| 3. |
How
can I initiate Auto TOC service? |
| |
To start Auto Mode or Auto TOC service,
you have to click ‘Start Service’
button from the BMK Application Suite. The service
runs in the background and processes one or more
PDF files available in the configured watched
folders. |
| 4. |
What
kind of PDF documents can Auto TOC handle? |
| |
Auto TOC is an active service that
has some pre-defined values using which it adds
bookmarks to the documents. Not all documents
qualify for Auto TOC processing. As the name specifies,
a table of contents (TOC) is the first requirement.
Secondly, it should be a properly formatted TOC
that is recognizable by the service. The rules
of recognition of a TOC in a PDF file are thoroughly
explained in the BMK’s User Manual. |
| 5. |
How
do I set auto TOC preferences? / Where do I mention
source-input filename? / Where do I get the resulting
file? |
| |
Initially, only a few configuration
settings need to be set. These settings can be
accessed by pressing the ‘Configuration’
button in the main BMK Application Suite You have
to set up for one or more watched folders where
the input PDF documents to be processed will be
kept. File checking time interval is the delay
that service will undergo to check for the fresh
arrival of new PDF documents in the watched folders.
You also have to specify a drive where an output
folder will be created to store the processed
files. The application will create a folder with
the name ‘BMKOut’ on this drive. The
processed files will be stored in the ‘BMKOut’
folder on this drive. You also have to select
log generation schemes. Once these settings have
been provided, put the input PDF files to the
watched folders and initiate the automatic processing
by clicking the ‘Start Service’ button.
The processed PDF document will be available in
the ‘BMKOut’ folder. Details of each
of these steps are available in the Quick Start
User Guide as well as the detailed User Reference
Manual. These documents are bundled with the purchased
application package. |
| 6. |
What
is ‘show bitmap warning’? |
| |
This helps identify any headings
available in the form of images within the PDF
documents. Checking this option will generate
warning messages in the log file whenever the
application finds bitmap images of size less than
or equal to the size specified in the application
advanced configurations. Note that checking this
option will, however increase the file processing
time. |
| 7. |
Auto
Mode’s light stays red and nothing happens
after the progress bar stops moving. |
| |
Auto Mode is an active service.
That means that it keeps on running in the background
even after it has processed your current file(s)
in the watched folder. As soon as you move another
PDF file in the watched folder, the progress bar
again starts moving indicating application processing
on the newly moved file(s). During its active
state, Start Service button icon turns to red
indicating that, upon pressing, it would now stop
the process. When you are finished processing
your PDF documents, you need to press the service
button (one with red traffic signal icon) again
to turn this to green and hence stop the Auto
Mode service. You can access your processed files
in the ‘BMKOut’ folder. Only by stopping
Auto Mode, will you be able to use any of the
other features of BMK Application Suite especially
the Interactive mode. |
| 8. |
After
stopping the service, I seem to have lost my PDF
document from the watched folder? |
| |
Your input files are not lost. It’s
only that they have been moved to BMKOut folder
after processing. You must remember the ‘BMKOut
folder drive’ option in the configurations.
The processed PDF documents are now available
in ‘BMKOut’ folder on the output drive
that you specified earlier. The PDF documents
that were processed successfully will now carry
bookmarks and will be available in ‘BMKOut’
folder. The input PDF documents that could not
be successfully processed due to any reason will
be available in a ‘BMKOut\error’ folder.
Another folder labeled ‘log’ will
also be present. This folder contains a log file
with all the processing details |
| 9. |
What
is a log file? |
| |
A log file is a file that keeps
track of the automatic processing of the documents
and also keeps records of ‘success’,
‘success with caution’, and ‘error’
messages. You can also see these logged messages
of Auto Mode after every processing of PDF files
on run time in a ‘BMK System Console’
window by choosing it from the ‘Advanced…’
settings in the ‘Configuration’ options.
A log file is always generated to keep you aware
of the settings that you chose, the processes
that occurred and the results that followed. |
| 10. |
What
is the difference between ‘success’
and ‘success with caution’? |
| |
A ‘success’ is the ideal
output scenario that is highly desired when you
process a file: perfect processing producing perfect
results. ‘Success with caution’ on
the other hand is a scenario that might carry
some flaws in the output: not everything desired
was achieved, mostly because the application encountered
some unrecognizable characters in the PDF document.
In the later case, unrecognizable characters in
the input files are replaced with other appropriate
characters in the output file. Such bookmarks,
where unrecognizable characters have been replaced,
are also listed in the log file for a quick review
of the user. |
 |
|
|
|
Auto FS
|
 |
|
 |
|
| 1. |
What
is Auto FS? / How can I activate it? |
| |
Auto FS is a procedure under the Automatic mode of BMK Application Suite that can automatically add bookmarks to complex PDF files using a user-specified Font & Style template in the form of a .BLI file. In order to process PDF files with Automatic mode using a Font & Style template, the PDF files are kept in BMK watched folders along with one .BLI file per folder. If more than one .BLI files are present in any one of the watched folders, at least one of these .BLI files should have name similar to that of containing watched folder. Auto FS will check the .BLI file for validity and provided specimen values, and will apply bookmarks to all the files in that folder accordingly. Since it's a part of Automatic mode, Auto FS is automatically turned on when the Automatic mode is on. |
| 2. |
How
can I create a Font & Style specimen template
(a .BLI file)? |
| |
A .BLI file is a Font & Style
template that BMK uses as processing criteria
while bookmarking PDF documents in Auto FS mode.
.BLI file is originally obtained by saving the
font-style settings in the BMK Interactive Application
while using Font & Style bookmarking. Once
saved, this BLI is reusable in Interactive mode
over and over again, and is also used as bookmarking
criteria for Auto FS. |
| 3. |
Should
the name of my .BLI always match with that of
the containing watched folder? |
| |
As long as there is only one .BLI
file per watched folder, its name doesn’t
necessarily need to match with that of the containing
watched folder. However, if there are more than
one .BLI per watched folder, in that case, name
of at least one of the .BLI files should match
with that of the containing watched folder. This
way application will pick this matching .BLI file
and will attempt to apply it on all the input
PDF files available in this watched folder. |
| 4. |
Can
I also apply a single .BLI on all the files in
all the watched folders? |
| |
Yes, you can choose a particular
.BLI file to process PDF files in all the watched
folders using Auto FS. In the main application
window, choose ‘BMK Preferences’ And
then click ‘Advanced..’. In the opening
Advanced options dialog box, check the option
that says, ‘Use one FS Template for all
watched folders’, and browse to the FS Template
file you want to use. However, in Automatic mode,
BMK will first look for an MRK-PDF namesake file
pair. If such a pair is found, that PDF will be
processed through import Bookmarks option and
the rest will be processed through the specified
.BLI file. |
| 5. |
How
can I configure Auto FS? |
| |
Auto FS runs on its own while BMK
is in Automatic execution mode. It simply looks
for a .BLI file in a watched folder. Upon finding
such a file, this BLI will be applied to all the
PDF files in that particular folder. The only
option that you can set is specifying a global
.BLI for all the watched folders. This can be
specified in the main BMK Application Suite configurations
under the ‘Advanced options’ dialog.
If there is no applicable .BLI file at all, Auto
FS won’t be executed and the Automatic mode
will shift to Auto TOC processing. |

|
| 1. |
What is BMK Lite? What is the difference between BMK Lite and BMK Standard Edition? |
| |
BMK Lite comprises of most of the
features from Professional and Standard editions
of BMK Application.
While the absence of the Automatic mode –
a powerful feature of BMK Professional Edition
– is the major difference that sets BMK
Professional apart from BMK Standard and BMK
Lite Editions, the Lite and Standard editions
have most features in common.
However, BMK Standard has some extended features
than BMK Lite including the ability to sort
bookmarks plus the inclusion of a very resourceful
Bookmarks Filter.
|
| 2. |
I can’t

Can I
use BMK Application Suite to bookmark scanned
PDF files? |
| |
Yes, BMK Application Suite can create
bookmarks for a Scanned PDF file, as well. If
you have the Master File along with the Scanned
PDF, you can use the ‘Import Bookmarks’
utility from the BMK Application Suite window
to create a pdfmark compliant file (an .mrk file).
This .mrk file, when processed through the Automatic
Mode along with the PDF file to be bookmarked,
will help output a bookmarked PDF document. |
| 2. |
Can I
process PDF files that are only text-based or
only image based, or a combination of both, with
Import Bookmarks function? |
| |
The Import Bookmarks utility is
also capable of handling heterogeneous PDF documents
(containing both scanned images and text pages),
and, of course, PDF documents containing normal
searchable text pages. The whole text page in
this case, would be considered as the target location
for a valid bookmark. If you want the text to
have more than one bookmark for different locations
in the same text page, you will have to re-run
the processed PDF file through relevant modes
of BMK Interactive Application to add bookmarks
pointing to appropriate locations. |

What
is a Master File? / What is a Flat File? |
| |
A Master File is supposedly a complete
record of all the possible bookmarks pointing
to different pages of a Scanned PDF file. The
Master File can exist in either .txt or .mrk format.
The .txt version of the file is called Flat File,
it contains page-wise information on the title
of the page, the page number (in the PDF document)
and at what level the bookmark should be added
to the PDF document separated from each other
with a carriage return (each appears on a new
line). Although there can be more attributes to
this information set, these three are essential
to create bookmarks in the concerned PDF document.
